Consciousness vs Mental Awareness:

———————

Consciousness and mental awareness are often treated as the same, but they are not.

Mental awareness is a function of the mind. It arises when the mind is active and capable of registering objects. It operates in waking and dream states and varies with the condition of the mind. When the mind is inactive, as in deep sleep, mental awareness is absent.

Consciousness is not a function and does not depend on mental activity. It does not arise, fluctuate, or disappear. It remains present across waking, dream, and deep sleep, irrespective of what the mind is doing.

Confusion occurs when the presence of mental awareness is taken as proof of consciousness, or when the absence of awareness is taken to imply unconsciousness. Awareness reveals objects; consciousness makes the revealing itself possible.

Recognizing this distinction prevents mistaking refined mental states for fundamental clarity.
